*** IET 2nd International Conference on System Safety 2007 ***

London, UK: 22 - 24 October 2007

The IET International Conference on System Safety 2007 will be held at Savoy Place on 22 - 24 October 2007. Dr. Carl Sandom of iSys Integrity has accepted an invitation to be the Conference Chairman for 2007. (see http://www-admin.iee.org/subdomains/conferences/safety/)

In addition, Carl will be presenting a Tutorial on Monday 22 October 2007 summarised here:

An Introduction to Human Factors and System Safety
Human Factors are often cited as the cause of hazards within safety-related systems; yet system safety cases often contain no mention of them. Conversely, system operators or users often provide substantial mitigation between hazards and their associated accidents; yet this is also often overlooked. If human factors risks are not considered, a system will not achieve the required level of integrity. If human factors mitigations are not considered, the technical system components may be over engineered at additional cost to achieve a target level of safety.

The tutorial is aimed at providing engineers and project managers in a range of sectors (e.g. Defence, Aerospace, Rail etc.) with an appreciation of the human factors and ergonomics issues relating to safe systems development. The tutorial will provide an overview of some of the main human factors tools and techniques required for designing safer systems and exercises will provide participants with consolidation of the theory presented.

At the end the tutorial, participants will not be human factors specialists; however, the aim is that they will have a better understanding of how to achieve safer human factors designs and better plan for human factors integration within a safety-related systems development programme.

*** Australian Safety Critical Systems Association (aSCSa) Conference 2007 ***

Adelaide, Australia: 29 - 31 August 2007

The aSCSa Conference 2007 will be held in Adelaide 29 - 31 August 2007. Dr. Carl Sandom of iSys Integrity has accepted an invitation to present a Tutorial entitled An Introduction to Human Factors and System Safety and a Keynote Presentation entitled Success and Failure: Human as Hazard, Human as Hero at the conference. (see http://www.safety-club.org.au/).

*** Tutorial - An Introduction to Human Factors and System Safety ***

Canberra, Australia: 28 August 2007

Dr Carl Sandom, iSys Integrity, UK
Australian National University (Building 108, Room N101)
12:15 PM to 4:15 PM

The Australian Safety Critical Systems Association, in association with the Austrailian Computer Society, is pleased to be able to offer this tutorial in Human Factors and System Safety from Dr Carl Sandom.

*** Ada Conference 2006 ***

Manchester, UK: 28 March 2006

The annual Ada Conference was held at Manchester and Carl Sandom gave a Keynote presentation to provide software developers with a broad overview of what an Independent Safety Auditor (ISA), safety regulator or third-party might look for when evaluating safety-critical software.

*** Safety-Critical Systems Symposium 2006 ***

Bristol, UK: 7-9 February 2006

The annual Safety-Critical Systems Symposium was held in brostol, UK. Carl Sandom and Derek Fowler (JDF Consultancy Ltd) gave a Tutorial presentation entitled System Safety Requirements for People, Procedures and Equipment. The tutorial provided systems engineers and managers with a practical introduction to the specification, validation and verification of safety requirements for complex systems containing hardware, software and human subsystems. *** New Human Factors Book Published for Engineers ***

Human Factors for Engineers

C. Sandom and R. S. Harvey (Eds.)
Product code: NS 032
ISBN: 0 86341 329 3
Format: Hardback
Pagination: 392pp.
Price: £49 / $89

Scope: The book Human Factors for Engineers introduces the reader to the subject of Human Factors and provides practical and pragmatic advice to assist engineers in designing interactive systems that are safer, more secure and easier to use - thereby reducing accidents due to human error, increasing system integrity and enabling more efficient process operations. The book discusses human factors integration methodology and reviews the issues that underpin consideration of key topics such as human error, automation and human reliability assessment. The book also examines design considerations including control room and interface design and acceptance and verification considerations.

Contents:
Human Factors and cost benefits. Human factors integration. Humans: skills, capabilities and limitations. The human factors toolkit. Task analysis. Automation and human work. To engineer is to err. Qualitative and quantitative evaluation of human error in risk assessment. Control room design. Human-computer interfaces: a principled approach to design. Usability. HF verification and validation (V & V). The application of simulators in systems evaluation. Safety assessment and human factors.

Readership: Aimed at practising systems engineers, engineering managers, project managers and also engineering students from undergraduate to postgraduate level.

*** Human Factors Professional Network Launch ***

Professional Networks, or PNs, are world-wide groups of people with common technical and professional interests initiated and coordinated by the Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE).

The IEE Human Factors Engineering Professional Network (HFE PN) was launched at Savoy Place, London on Thursday 4 July 2002. Magdalen Galley and Prof. Brian Mellitt, the Presidents of the Ergonomics Society and the IEE, were there to endorse the HFE PN launch aims to bring the Human Factors and Engineering disciplines closer together.

A keynote presentation was given by Dr. Barry Kirwan, Eurocontrol, entitled 'Human factors and reliability - making a difference?'. The launch event was well attended and a Networking Buffet was held immediately after the event.

The IEE HFE PN Executive Committee Chairman is Dr. Carl Sandom, Principal Consultant for iSys Integrity who specialise in system safety, human factors and training. Further details about IEE HFE PN activities and events can be found at: http://www.iee.org/OnComms/pn/humanfactors/ or by contacting Carl at: Carl@iSys-Integrity.com
